Why won't my iPod make any sound?
If your iPod won't play music or make any sounds at all, first check the straightforward -- make sure that the iPod is in "play" mode rather than "pause" (and if the "hold" switch is in its locked position, you will need to unlock it to adjust the controls), make sure the volume is turned up to a reasonable level, and that the headphones are plugged in completely. Try a couple of different songs to make sure that it isn't a problem with the particular file the iPod is trying to play.
If that doesn't work -- and the display indicates that music is playing (assuming it's not an iPod shuffle sans display) -- try unplugging the headphones and plugging them back in. Try gently rotating the headphone jack while plugged in to see if you can then hear the music (or if it cuts in and out when you rotate the connection).
After that, unplug the headphones and plug them into a computer, a stereo, or anything else with a headphone jack and see if the headphones work connected to something other than the iPod. If the headphones still don't work, try another pair of headphones with the iPod and see if you then can hear the music.
If you have tried all of the above and the iPod still won't produce sound, it's highly likely that the audio jack is broken or the iPod has another hardware problem (such as a bad solder connection), but go ahead and run through the Apple recommended "five R's" for good measure as well.

Why won't my iPod play a particular song? Why isn't a song visible? Why won't my iPod play some songs that will play in iTunes?
If your iPod won't play a particular song, or a song won't show up in your iPod, but these songs play without a problem in iTunes the most likely cause is that the song is in a format that is not supported by your particular iPod. You will need to re-rip the music from CD, re-download the songs in a compatible format, or convert the songs into a format that your iPod can play.

Why does my iPod "hang", "freeze", or skip tracks in the middle of some songs?
If your iPod "hangs" or "freezes" in the middle of some songs this is most likely due to a problem with the particular song file -- it could be corrupted, for instance -- general data corruption on the iPod, or a problem with the hard drive in "full size" iPod and iPod mini models.
First, try the Apple recommended "five R's" and see if this resolves the problem. If scanning the disk for errors indicates that there is a problem that cannot be fixed, you likely will need to have the hard drive replaced or otherwise have the iPod repaired.
The "five R's" solution should remedy general data corruption on the iPod and report whether or not there is a hard drive problem. If problems continue, particularly with a single song, you likely have identified your culprit. Delete the misbehaving song.
If it is related to a hard drive problem, site sponsor Mission Repair offers free hardware diagnosis and an affordable 24 hour repair service by mail for all iPod models.
