If it is out of warranty, Apple will replace the battery in your "full size" iPod -- the original iPod, iPod 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G/video, and 6G/classic -- for a cost of US$59 plus US$6.95 shipping.

A variety of third-party services also are available, including one provided by site sponsor Other World Computing. The company offers a battery replacement service for considerably less than Apple charges and sells "longer runtime than stock" batteries for self-installation as well.

Replacing the battery in a full-size iPod is quite difficult, but it is not an insurmountable challenge for the technically inclined. These iPod models do not require soldering to replace the battery.
